“The architecture of Jean-Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart is measured, accurate in its insertion and impeccable in its execution. But this is only one facet of their work. Their perfectly controlled artefacts are not just functional, rational objects. They are also very precise, efficient and active “urban sensors”. They are designed to elicit lasting emotions and fuel our imagination. A study of their major buildings and projects shows how, whilst working within the discipline of architecture and its fundamentals – plan, section, façade – and maintaining the focus on functional requirements, these architects open their projects up to a new and what might be called ‘fictional’ dimension.” Dominique Boudet, “JEAN MARC IBOS MYRTO VITART / ARCHITECTURE AND THE CITY”
Jean-Marc Ibos (1957) studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-arts, in Nanterre, and graduated in 1982.
Myrto Vitart (1955) studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-arts, in Paris, and graduated in 1984.
Jean-Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart teamed up to create Ibos & Vitart office in 1990. The Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, first completed work of the studio, earned the architects international recognition. They received the Equerre d’Argent Award in 1997, as well as the DuPont Benedictus Award in 1998. Many studies follow, from institutional or private commissions, and distinguished realizations as the Maison des Adolescents in Paris (2005), the Archives Départementales d’llle-et-Vilaine in Rennes (2006), the Médiathèque André Malraux in Strasbourg (2008) or their first important residential building in Boulogne-Billancourt (2015). In 2017, they won the international competition for the extension of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Quai d’Orsay, in Paris. In 2016, Ibos and Vitart were awarded the French Grand Prix national de l’architecture for their work as a whole.
