Eurocontrol’s headquarters is a landmark visible from afar. On the as yet unnamed boulevard Nord, it presents its singular profile. It’s immediately recognizable. Located on the Saclay plateau, on the western edge of the Corbeville district, at the junction with the Polytechnique district, the new headquarters retains the scale of the latter’s major university facilities. It thus holds its own against AgroParisTech, firmly planted opposite on avenue Madeleine Pelletier. At the same time, its strong linearity announces the urban logic so specific to Corbeville, with its striped profiles linking south and north, and the wooded hillsides at the edge of the plateau. In response to the program, the project comprises a concrete base that seeks out the building limits of the plot, and a superstructure building set back from the plinth. The base expresses its massiveness over a double height. A vast glazed hall opens onto Boulevard Nord, taking over the corner at the crossroads and giving full expression to the avenue Madeleine Pelletier, where the entrance is located.The superstructure building fits into the generic linearity of the site. From the boulevard Nord, where its façade rises like a bow, it follows the sun’s path in regular cascades from north to south. The large office plateformes, entirely glazed and encircled by balconies, are extended to the south by generous planted terraces that reconstitute the natural continuities. The sky, the object of all controls within the building, is here freely offered to the enjoyment of the senses.
